2014* . Daring

2014 . Daring

SATURDAY 4th AND SUNDAY 5th NOVEMBER 2014

“Boldness has genius, power and magic” Goethe

Since 1989, hundreds of people active in public debate have come to discuss and share ideas with students and a growing public. Year after year, participants in the Cité de la Réussite have respectfully attempted to play their part in building citizen-sector debate. Sharing knowledge, showing interest, keeping an open mind, questioning, learning, and understanding others – these are the simple values we have made it our goal to promote for the past two decades.

This year, the Cité de la Réussite has decided to ask its participants to show “daring.” Daring is that attitude of the mind, that strength in action that makes it possible to overcome obstacles in order to improve and transform the world. Sometimes it is the spark, sometimes the accelerator of human will. Individual daring is the root of creation, invention, innovation; collectively, it helps people, enterprises, organizations, and communities to leapfrog over the all-too-often paralyzing challenges of our era.

On our globalized planet, in the throes of crisis, in a Europe haunted by doubt, to be daring is to know how to be bold. In a time when everything seems slowed down, reined in, held back, knowing how to overcome one’s fears is crucial, as is believing in oneself, in others, in life, trusting one’s ability to transcend an austere reality and bring dreams to life.

It is a desire, an energy, a faith in a possible future for which everyone feels the urgency and the need.

Young societies, “emerging countries,” new democracies searching for their true identity in the midst of chaos, the “Arab revolutions,” the cries of “Occupiers” from Tahrir Square to Taksim Square – these phenomena bear no resemblance to the revolutionary movements and uprisings of the past. This contemporary unrest is based on increasingly universal values rooted in human rights, solidarity economics, and freedom of thought and action. Whatever their cultures, the participants in these uprisings have shown daring in the face of repressive and seemingly immovable systems.

When mountains must be moved, daring is the universal engine. In November 2014, the Cité de la réussite has invited leaders, public officials, artists, thinkers, journalists, and citizens to participate in two days of conversation and debate to dare to map out paths to a brighter future together.

When it comes to directing and understanding this world, daring is not a program; it includes us all; it is a way of thinking, an attitude toward action.
