2008* . Commitment

2008 . Commitment

SATURDAY 5th AND SUNDAY 6th APRIL 2008

On the theme Commitment, two charismatic women took gracefully floor in the Grand Amphiteater of the Sorbonne: Sharon Stone and Her Majesty the Queen Rania Al-Abdullah of Jordan.

Why have we chosen Commitment as the central theme for the many debates, encounters and exchanges organised for the 16th Cité de la Réussite ?

Commitment is a concept with many layers of meaning, seemingly very different from each other: two people who make a commitment to each other, a committed artist or intellectual, a military commitment or engagement, commitment to a cause, or an entrepreneur or company that makes a commitment in terms of quality of service or corporate values.

What are the forms and wellsprings of commitment in our personal choices? What role is played by passion, conviction, vocation and ambition? We will be looking closely at the philosophical, educational, professional, social, psychological and religious motivations of commitment.

Today, we are overloaded with information – about real developments, things, inequalities, the miseries and injustices of our time – and yet our hearts and consciences cry out against these situations. In our heart of hearts, they awaken our humanity and solidarity and a "commitment" is born.

Today, collective commitment expresses itself in the traditional forums for exchange of ideas but also in other arenas – in the world of business and law, in social relations, around discrimination, North-South inequality, ethics and protection of the environment.

Some make a commitment to express their desire to change the world, others do it for reasons of personal growth and development; still others are simply seeking a more meaningful way of communicating in a society that they fear encourages people to live as isolated, unconnected individuals.

Whether we make a commitment to the advance of science or to protecting the planet, combating poverty or promoting peace, commitment is that part of ourselves that we agree to devote to the progress of mankind.
